Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a plant native to the desert areas of Botswana in southern Africa. There are used for hundreds of years by indigenous tribes for joint pains, liver, kidney, gall and bladder ailments.
The aboveground part of the plant, which is so remarkable thanks to its hook-like fruit, is only visible during 2 months a year. During the rest of the year it retreats back into the ground and survives thanks to the stocks stored in the thick root tubers. It is therefore that the latter contains the active substances of the devil’s claw. The main therapeutic substance which is present in the root of the plant is referred to harpagoside.
Devil’s claw has been previously used in traditional herbal medicine, but is still regularly applied to joint pains.
